Handcrafted in Edmore, Michigan from 100% Northern White Cedar logs, this six-foot bench comfortably seats two to three adults. The solid log frame uses mortise and tenon joinery reinforced with hardware, built with the same construction standards Lakeland Mills has maintained since 1923. It is designed for permanent outdoor installation with no seasonal maintenance required.
The contoured seat and back are shaped for real comfort, not just appearance. Northern White Cedar is lightweight relative to most hardwoods, keeping the bench maneuverable despite its solid log construction. The six-foot length makes it versatile — useful as a standalone piece or paired with a cedar log patio table.
No finish is required to protect the wood. Northern White Cedar's natural oils resist rot and insect damage from the inside out. The bench can stay outside year-round without treatment. Over time, untreated cedar weathers to a silver-grey; a penetrating oil every few years preserves the original tone if preferred.
About Cedar Log Construction
Lakeland Mills has been building cedar log furniture in Edmore, Michigan since 1923. Every piece in the Cedar Log Contoured Comfort collection is made from 100% Northern White Cedar — real logs, not veneer, not composites, not Chinese fir (a species commonly sold as cedar online that typically lasts 1 to 3 years outdoors). Northern White Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, insect-resistant, and dimensionally stable, making it one of the few domestic woods that can spend its entire life outside without chemical treatment or annual maintenance. The result is furniture that improves with age rather than deteriorating.
A Note on Log Checking
Because this bench is made from real logs, it may develop small surface cracks as the wood acclimates to changes in temperature and humidity. Log checking is completely normal in solid log furniture — not a defect — and does not affect structural integrity or longevity. FAQ
- Do I need to seal or finish cedar log furniture? Cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant — no finish is required. You can leave it untreated and it will weather gradually to a silver-grey. If you prefer to maintain the original color, apply a penetrating oil or outdoor sealant every few years.
- What is log checking and is it normal? Log checking is the appearance of small surface cracks in the wood as it adjusts to changes in temperature and humidity. It is a natural characteristic of real log furniture, not a defect. It does not affect structural integrity.
- Can I leave cedar log furniture outside year-round? Yes. Northern White Cedar is designed for outdoor exposure. You can leave it out through all four seasons without treatment. If you experience very harsh winters, covering or storing pieces can extend the finish life, but it is not required for the wood itself.
- Does the furniture come assembled? Cedar Log Contoured Comfort furniture ships partially assembled with all hardware and detailed instructions included. Most pieces can be completed in under an hour.
