The Cedar Log 23" End Bench pair is two compact benches, each 23 inches wide, built from 100% Northern White Cedar. The dimensions are intentional — 23 inches is the width that works at the end of a cedar log patio table, where a full-length bench would overhang and a single chair would leave gaps. Mortise and tenon joinery at the structural connections and galvanized exterior hardware throughout give both benches the solid, settled feel of real log construction rather than the flex and creak of assembled lumber. The cedar log profile matches across the Contoured Comfort collection, so these benches coordinate naturally with patio tables, chairs, and the rest of the line.
Small outdoor accessories often get the least durable material in a furniture set. Most compact outdoor benches at this price point are made from Chinese fir — a wood that photographs convincingly but isn't rot-resistant and deteriorates in 1 to 3 years outdoors. Northern White Cedar is a different category of material: naturally rot and insect resistant without chemical treatment, designed for outdoor seasons, and capable of lasting 10 to 20 years under normal conditions. The material that holds up for a full cedar log dining table should hold up for the benches at the ends of it.
Ships as a set of two, partially assembled from Edmore, Michigan, with all hardware and step-by-step instructions included for both benches. Left untreated, Northern White Cedar weathers gradually to a silver-grey tone. Apply a penetrating oil or water-based deck sealer to maintain the original pale cream color, or use any outdoor-rated stain or paint to coordinate with a specific finish palette. Pairs naturally with the Cedar Log Patio Tables in the Contoured Comfort collection.
About Cedar Log Construction
Every piece in the Contoured Comfort collection is built from 100% Northern White Cedar — actual logs, not cedar veneer, cedar-look composite, or finger-jointed lumber with a cedar stain. Logs are shaped and joined using mortise and tenon construction at the structural connection points, with galvanized exterior hardware throughout. This is the same construction method Lakeland Mills has used in Edmore, Michigan since 1923: straightforward, durable, designed for outdoor seasons without requiring covered storage, chemical treatment, or annual refinishing.
A Note on Log Checking
Northern White Cedar releases moisture after it is cut and dried. As the wood adjusts to changes in temperature and humidity, small surface cracks called checks can form along the grain. Log checking is a normal characteristic of genuine cedar log furniture and is not a structural defect. Checks are surface-level only and do not affect the strength or durability of the piece. FAQ
- Do I need to seal or finish cedar log furniture? Cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant — no finish is required. You can leave it untreated and it will weather gradually to a silver-grey. If you prefer to maintain the original color, apply a penetrating oil or outdoor sealant every few years.
- What is log checking and is it normal? Log checking is the appearance of small surface cracks in the wood as it adjusts to changes in temperature and humidity. It is a natural characteristic of real log furniture, not a defect. It does not affect structural integrity.
- Can I leave cedar log furniture outside year-round? Yes. Northern White Cedar is designed for outdoor exposure. You can leave it out through all four seasons without treatment. If you experience very harsh winters, covering or storing pieces can extend the finish life, but it is not required for the wood itself.
- Does the furniture come assembled? Cedar Log Contoured Comfort furniture ships partially assembled with all hardware and detailed instructions included. Most pieces can be completed in under an hour.
