About Log Checking

Northern White Cedar is a living wood, and like any character worth knowing, it has quirks. One of those quirks is called "checking" — the natural process where wood releases moisture and develops surface cracks as it settles. These can range from a hairline sliver to a crack running the full length of a log, and here's the important part: they only ever appear on the surface. They have zero impact on the structural strength or integrity of your furniture.

We think checking gives each piece its own fingerprint. No two chairs look exactly alike — that's a feature, not a defect.

What table height does this chair work with?

Standard dining height — pairs with any 28–30" table including the Cedar Looks dining tables, farmer's tables, and bistro tables.

Does it need to be sealed or treated?

No. Northern White Cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant. You can leave it natural, apply a stain, or use an outdoor wood sealant — but none of those are required to protect the wood.

Will it turn grey over time?

If left untreated outdoors, Northern White Cedar weathers to a natural silver-grey over time. If you want to maintain the original cream color, apply a UV-resistant outdoor stain.

What is log checking?

Is this chair suitable for indoor use?

This warranty covers structural defects under normal use and does not cover damage from weather exposure, improper assembly, misuse, or normal wear including log checking (which is a natural characteristic of wood, not a defect).
